Let's get up close
and personal with the owner of the company Larry Schwarz.
Larry is the founder and creator of Rumpus Toy. His BIG BOY image
allows him to think and create remarkable designs that are appealing
and exciting to children.
Larry's background includes attending the University of Pennsylvania
where he founded "H Magazine", an entertainment guide
for the Hamptons resort area.
He also can be credited for founding the first Vietnam Yellow
pages and the now influential Vietnamese Business Journal.
Larry graduated from Cardozo Law School where he spent most of
his time doodling out sketches of ideas of toy lines he would
ultimately introduce.
In February 1997,
Rumpus would unveil his first line of toys at the New York International
Toy Fair.
Rumpus would receive an overwhelming response to their line and
would be labeled by the media as a "breath of fresh air"
Rumpus not only
offers an exciting toy line; they also have a remarkable office
that is guaranteed to delight any child.
Imagine going to work everyday and being allowed to act like kids?
I was fascinated with their office layout, which was totally structured
and geared towards children.
Their office is like a kids big toy room. Pinball machine, bag
pipes, giant colorful chairs and flying toys coming at you from
all directions.
Rumpus has also
taken his product line a step further by making his packing materials
interactive for fun and to avoid waste.
How many times have we opened boxes packed with little while peanuts
only to decide what to do with them? Rumpus has the answer. They
have cleverly designed a line of packing peanuts, which are reusable.
Children can now have more fun then they ever imagined, Rumpus
packing peanuts are interactive because you can lick and stick
them together to make creative designs.
Not only is Rumpus an environmentally safe company they also design
their packing boxes with special cutouts and designs to occupy
children for hours of creative fun.
I was given the
opportunity to speak with Amy Kunen VP of Communications at Rumpus
Toy. During our discussions I learned that although Rumpus has
toy and web designers, the real creativity comes from owner Larry
Schwarz.
Larry is the inspiration behind the creation of all Rumpus Toys.
Larry's ideas can be inspired by just about anything imaginable.
I asked Amy the
following; All toys can be considered collectible, is there any
one particular toy that can truly be labeled a collectible with
possible future market value?
Honestly, all of our toys are amazing and seem to have longevity.
If you look at our original toys like (Gus Gutz), (Monster in
My Closet) and (Bennny Blanket), they are all still really hot!
People love them all!
So as for the future, owning a Rumpus Toy should be a win, win
situation.
How do you compare
your products to other companies, i.e. marketing strategies, appealing
factors and interactive website.
As far as I'm concerned, our toys and our on-line content surpass
everyone else's because they are highly tactile, visual, original
and fun! Awards like the National Parenting Center's Seal of Approval
(for our website and toys), NetGuide's "Best Kids Site"
and all of the many awards by Dr. Toy, the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio
attest to that.
The Rumpus Company is like no other company I have interviewed. Their commitment to children, community and employees is way above the normal standard.
In early 1999, Rumpus
established the Rumpus Kids FUNdation, a charitable foundation
committed to providing children and young adults with both human
and financial support.
Through the Rumpus Kids FUNdation, Rumpus donates toys for various
children's organizations and send the Rumpus Road Rocket to dozens
of hospitals, schools and charitable events to give toys and bring
smiles to hundreds of underprivileged children.
In addition to the charitable contributions, the Rumpus Kids FUNdation recognizes the importance of personal involvement in specific causes. Because of this, Rumpus has internally adopted a formal policy in which all Rumpus employees are required to take three (3) FUNdays per year, to volunteer for a charity of their choice.
