I have enjoyed crocheting for over
40 years.
I recall as a young girl, approx. eight or nine years old, I use
to visit with an elderly neighbor who had lost
her husband and had no family nearby. Her home was filled with
crocheted doilies, afghans and memorabilia.
I expressed interest in crocheting and she showed me the single
crochet stitch.
Years passed, and it wasn't until
I went to work at the tender age of 15 ½ when I was reintroduced
to
crochet by a woman who worked in my office. Up until then, I had
only mastered one stitch.
She showed me how to double crochet and make granny squares.
I decided that it was now time to
undertake my first project. Having no clue on how long a chain
should be,
I just kept crocheting and crocheting and crocheting. When I decided
I had it long enough to make an afghan,
I stopped, turned and started my second row. To make a long story
short, months later I finally finished.
The only problem was, this afghan was so large that it would easily
cover a 5 x 8 sq. area.
For years I have carried this afghan around from place to place,
always rolling it up and placing it on the shelf.
Two things I have learned over the
years;
Your chain will stretch as it gets longer.
Pay close attention to your first row as it dictates the size
of your finished project.
