TY PRODUCTS ARE 100% SAFE FOR CHILDREN

Have a Safe and Happy 4th of July

July 3, 2009

Hello Ms.Janie

It has been awhile since I had any TY news to share.
I was with the BeanieFriendsWorldWide this past weekend where we ended our 7th annual reunion at Ty Park on Sunday. I went into the Jewel/Osco in Westmont and ran across the last pair of the new packaged TY Girls Marvelous Mariah and Sweet Sydney with the mini BO the dog.

The Ty rep was in the next day, but I don't know if they were able to order more???

I check the other 3 Jewel/Oscos in the area, a restaurant I know carries Ty and the Hallmark. No one else had them. I then checked the one near me in Indiana and they didn't either.

Ty rumored to purchase Jackson’s Neverland Ranch

The neverending Neverland queue

Local conservationists have already had one run-in with Barrack, after he bought the local Happy Valley Vineyard to use as a holiday home, and promptly tried (unsuccessfully) to get permission to open a tasting room there, where paying visitors could sample his "Barrack" wine. Until recently, he was rumoured to be on the verge of unloading Neverland to the toy magnate Ty Warner. But Jackson's sudden death added tens of millions to the property's potential value. Within hours of the singer's demise, Barrack had added smart new signs on the gate saying "Neverland: Once upon a time."

June 23, 2009

Ms. Janie,

I just thought I'd drop you a line to tell you about my latest venture: a website devoted to the new Teenie Beanie promotion. I'm using my pre-existing website Peace Mania to host this new page,
http://teenies.peacebears.com.

In addition to reporting news and events about the Teenies (as it becomes available), I will also be editorializing a little about issues related to this Teenie event. Teenies.peacebears.com is set up similar to a blog format. My plans are to keep things fresh and fun.

Needless to say, I'm really excited about the Teenies; especially since I've fallen into a Beanie rut the last several years. I hope that this event will inspire other collectors to regain an interest in a passion that has been such an exciting part of our lives for the last 10 to 20 years!

I encourage site visitors to check back often (I may even be hosting a contest or two) and sign up for my mailing list, which will alert visitors to updates. I also hope that site visitors will send me their thoughts and news and pictures, and even spend some time discussing the Teenies on the Peace Mania Message Forum, to which I have added a couple new boards pertaining to the Teenies.

My hope for teenies.peacebears.com is that it will get other collectors (especially the "in-rut" collectors) excited about Beanies again. I am really looking forward to July 17!

The 5 most expensive hotel rooms in the world
Forget about your financial worries and enter the world of the super rich, where spending almost £23,000 a night to stay at the world's most luxurious hotels is nothing special. With help from Forbes here is our list of the five most expensive hotels in the world.

#2

Four Seasons Hotel, New York, USA: Ty Warner Penthouse suite
£21,500 a night
This 400 square metre penthouse tops the entire top floor of this magnificent hotel offering a 360 degree view of the Manhattan skyline. The nine-room suite is the brainchild of designer Peter Marino, architect IM Pei and the hotel's owner Ty Warner (the billionaire creator of the Beanie Babies). It boasts fabrics woven with platinum and gold, an indoor-outdoor Zen garden, a four foot high glass chandelier (see picture) plus the services of a personal butler, a personal trainer/therapist and a private chauffeur. The photos on the Four Seasons' website reveal its breathtaking luxury. Knowing that, unless I win the lottery, I'll almost certainly never enjoy its charms made me want to weep with envy.

Students help make a difference in Iraq

Sometimes all it takes is collecting a few old toys to make a difference.
That’s what seventh and eighth grade students at Incarnation students are learning, as they organized a collection of Beanie Babies to send to Captain Michael Kummerer in the United States Army, currently located in Iraq.
Joe Brittelli, a member of the parish staff of the Church of the Incarnation helped organize the event, as he had the connection with Captain Kummerer. The Junior High class gathered 900 Beanie Babies and have been sending a box of the Beanie Babies every month.

Govt bans import of Chinese mobiles, dairy products, toys
Security agencies had raised concern over the use of these phones, many of which, they said, were being used by terrorists to set off bombs and communicate among themselves. Since these sets do not have the 15-digit IMEI number, or cloned numbers, the authorities find it difficult to track the sale or usage. Approximately 30 million such phones are in use at present.

On June 11, TOI had first reported that import of such phones was yet to be banned as neither the home ministry nor the telecom industry had written to the commerce ministry on the issue.

The DGFT also banned till January 2010 the import of toys that do not meet international safety standards and norms. This move too will hit imports of toys mainly from China and several other countries. India had blocked import of toys from China in January on health grounds, after concerns over their safety were raised in developed markets. But the restriction was eased later after Beijing questioned the restrictions on the ground that New Delhi did not put such curbs on toys from other countries.

The ban, however, will not be applicable to toys that come with a certificate from laboratories accredited to the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC). The volume-driven, price-competitive Chinese toys are estimated to have a 70% share in the global toy market. The domestic market is estimated at Rs 2,500 crore.

Mattel on track to achieve savings target-CFO
Still targeting $180 mln-$200 mln total savings by 2010
* Sees long-term gross margin 50 pct of net sales
* Shares up 1.5 percent
The world's biggest toy company, is on track for cumulative savings of up to $200 million by the end of 2010 as it cuts costs to offset lower sales in the economic downturn.
Mattel, which has cut 1,000 jobs, shaved expenses tied to corporate travel and taken steps to trim distribution and advertising costs, is already looking at savings of $90 million to $100 million this year, Chief Financial Officer Kevin Farr said on Wednesday at the company's annual analysts meeting, which was also webcast.
The workforce reduction would result in savings of $60 million, while a tighter travel policy would yield a 20 percent to 25 percent reduction in those expenses, Farr said.
Mattel, with key brands such as Barbie and Hot Wheels, has already raised prices of its toys in 2009. It has faced high input costs in the past few years, although some commodity costs have eased a bit recently.

Transformers' toys live up to big-screen robots
The 32-year-old has been collecting the robot toys for more than 20 years. He even has one of the brand's main characters, Optimus Prime, tattooed in full color on his leg.
The owner of a meat-processing plant, Mueller recently traveled from his native Ontario, Canada, to Southern California to attend BotCon, the 15th annual Transformers convention, in hopes of adding to his arsenal of more than 1,000 toys.
The "Transformers" movie and its forthcoming sequel have spawned dozens of new characters, while also having the effect of making the shape-shifting robots infinitely more complex than the toys that were first introduced in 1984, the year Mueller became a fan. This self-perpetuating cycle — toys inspiring a film that inspired more sophisticated toys — has also made the miniaturized versions "cool again for a younger generation," Mueller said.
As the film raised the bar on the merchandise, the merchandise has responded, Mueller said.
"They're very movie-accurate," he said.

Retailers place holiday orders at specialty toy show
Hundreds of specialty toymakers are showing off their Uglydolls, fuel-cell car kits and make-your-own tiara sets at St. Paul's RiverCentre through Wednesday.
The annual American Specialty Toy Retailing Association Marketplace & Academy — the largest gathering of the sort — is a prime opportunity for retailers to start Christmas shopping early. Many will place orders while in St. Paul, said Kathleen McHugh, the association's president. The event opened Monday
Americans spent an estimated $2 billion last year on specialty toys, defined as being educational, uncommon and made with high-quality materials. "The big key is they're not found everywhere," McHugh said.
Last fall's economic collapse impacted sales for many of these toymakers and retailers, but some on Monday said sales seem to be rebounding. McHugh said the toys on display should appeal to price-conscious shoppers.

Amazon to Pay Toys ‘R’ Us $51 Million
Online retailer Amazon.com agreed to pay toy store chain Toys "R" Us $51 million to settle a long standing dispute filed by Toys "R" Us from 2004.
Nine years ago the two retailers signed a 10-year agreement giving Toys "R" Us exclusive rights to sell certain toys on Amazon.com’s Web site. It was a way to boost online toy sales for both vendors.
The Dot-com era deal allowed Toys "R" Us to establish a foothold in the nascent online retail market selling its wares on the already-established Amazon.com, while Amazon saw the partnership as a way to expand into new product lines without having to stock and market everything itself.
But in 2004, Toys "R" Us sued Amazon for breach of contract, claiming that the online retailer violated the agreement by allowing other third-party merchants to sell toys and children’s products on its Web site. In turn, Amazon countered by alleging that Toys "R" Us failed to keep products and toys in stock, discouraging potential customers.

Royal Mail launches 'mythical' stamp collection
A set of new stamps bearing pictures of mythical creatures such as mermaids, fairies and pixies have been issued by Royal Mail.
A fire-breathing dragon, a giant carrying a boulder and Queen Mab riding her chariot are among the characters from British folklore featured on the six postage stamps.
Two first class stamps have images of a majestic stone-grey unicorn and a flame-spitting dragon, while a pair of 62p stamps for worldwide airmail letters show a pixie riding a snail and a boulder-wielding giant.

Auction Winner Pays $431,000 for 90-Cent Stamp
well traveled envelope with a rare stamp has been sold at auction for 431-thousand dollars.

Stamps and markings on the envelope show it made a journey by ship and train from New York to Calcutta India in 1873.

The envelope is considered extremely rare because it still has a 90 cent stamp affixed to it bearing the likeness of Abraham Lincoln.

That stamp is one of less than 50-thousand originally issued in 1869.

In addition to the original journey of the letter that took it across the Atlantic then through Germany and Italy by train, back onto a ship for the voyage to Egypt then from Suez to Bombay and finally across India there's more history.

The envelope and stamp were sold to a collector in 1943 for 65-hundred dollars, then both were stolen. They turned up again, more than 60 years later, in 2006 when a couple asked a stamp shop in Chicago to give them the value of some old envelopes they'd discovered in the home of a deceased friend.

Companies Navigate New Toy Safety Measure
At first, a far-reaching law implementing a lead ban and other toy safety standards sent companies and industry groups into a panic. Then, it sent them running to their lawyers.
The regulations, which went into effect in February, constitute the biggest overhaul of consumer product safety laws since the Consumer Product Safety Commission was created in 1972. Civil penalties for noncompliance can now reach $15 million, up from about $1.8 million. Companies say they're overwhelmed by the requirements of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008, adding that the resource-strapped CPSC has offered little guidance.

Billerica High School program prepares future teachers

Growing up, MacKenzie Maynard knew she wanted to be a teacher.
As a young girl she would organize her plush stuffed Beanie Babies into a class and cut up slips of paper for each of her "students."

Now, the 16-year-old high school sophomore is experiencing teaching first-hand in local preschool and elementary classrooms as one of the 61 members of Billerica Memorial High School’s Future Teachers of America program. Students of all grade levels are eligible to participate and take part in activities like shadowing an elementary or middle school teacher for a day or teaching a lesson to four-year-old children in Billerica’s Project Support.

"This gives me the opportunities to not just have my Beanie Babies, but to actually shadow teachers in a classroom," said Maynard, noting that she recently shadowed a teacher at her alma mater, Ditson Elementary School. "It shows you that if you want to be a teacher it’s definitely the right thing to do."

New Effort Aims at Counterfeits

Counterfeit coin imports are the focus of a new consumer awareness campaign.

Five numismatic organizations met May 27 just prior to the Long Beach Coin, Stamp & Collectibles Expo to launch a multi-pronged consumer protection campaign.

"There are numerous reports of replica coins being shipped from China without the word, 'COPY," on them despite clearly showing that word on photos of those items when they were offered for sale," said Industry Council for Tangible Assets Chairman Fred Weinberg.

Once in the United States, they would violate the 1973 Hobby Protection Act.

Professional Numismatists Guild President Gary Adkins suggested the groups may want to file formal complaints with the Chinese government.

Import of Toys with Lead Paint Results in $2.3M Fine for Mattel, Fisher-Price

Mattel, Inc. and their wholly owned subsidiary, Fisher-Price, Inc., have been ordered to pay $2.3 million in fines for importing about two million Chinese-made toys with lead paint levels that violated federal law.
The fines were announced on Friday by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), representing the third highest fine in the agency’s history.
In August and September 2007, the toys from China were pulled from shelves in after testing discovered that they broke the U.S. legal limit on the amount of lead allowed in paint. Many of the toys were from lines of popular characters such as Barbie and Go Diego Go.
The recalls came at a high point of consumer concern over products being shipped from China. In March of that year, contaminated pet food imported from China was found to contain melamine, which was linked to as many as 3,600 pet deaths.

Hi Janie,

Just thought I would pass this along. It is from a letter my rep sent me in regards to the Bo releases and the June releases:

As many of you know last month we released a new beanie baby named Bo. He is a replica of the Obama’s new pup. This month, by popular demand, we are introducing classic size Bo and Bo key clips. They are packed in a complete kit. The three pieces combined make a great presentation.

We also have some very exciting news about this summer. Due to contractual obligations, I can only tell you that we will be continuing our Teenie Beanie Adventure in the World’s Largest Fast Food Chain. I will be able to give you more information about the program in mid June. We are already gearing up with beanie corrugate kits that will have product to compliment the Teenie Beanie Adventure. There will be several different size kits so everyone can be part of this exciting program.

No new releases from Ty for the month of June thus far! I did get an e-mail from a secondary dealer that indicated a new line should be released soon. If I recall correctly, the latest Ask Ty question also eluted to something new coming our way. Things sure have been very slow lately.

***A week ago I asked for you to share what you missed about Ty. Here are some of the responses.***

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to vent. I give you permission and hope you print what I have written.
I miss the feeling that Ty cares about the collectors.
I miss the excitement I felt on the first of each month waiting to see what goodies Ty had for us.
I miss the Halloween contest.
I miss the magazine.
I miss the information and clues where to find hard to get Beanies from the many emails in Ty Talk.
I miss the Ty store exclusives.

It seems like Ty has handed the reins of Ty Inc. to someone who isn't interested in Beanie Babies and the people who collect them. They manage to put out 2 or 3 Beanies per month, don't always announce them on the first, never have any surprise announcements through out the month, etc.

I could go on and on with my feelings and how disappointed I am in Ty, but I will close with thanks again for allowing me to write to someone who cares about Beanies like I do.

Sincerely,

Ilene Karpman

____________

Ms. Janie,
I miss your daily updates. I realize things are slow but I lived my day by your news.

________________

I miss everything that Ty use to do when collecting was fun. I still collect but it just is not as exciting as it use to be.
________________

I miss the rumors, news and activity on the Ty boards. There is nothing like the good olde days. What went wrong? Ms. Janie, please ask Ty to bring back the excitement.
I started collecting when I was fourteen, I visted the Ty site and your site every single day. Now I am 18 and still collect but without the excitement. There is no need to collect more than one of every style, besides, they are very hard to find now-a-days.
Thanks Ms. Janie for asking.

The Aqua Bomb, Marshmallow Blaster and the Toypedo -- it's not hard to see how the toys would be a hit with kids. Unfortunately, they've also caught the attention of child safety advocates.

"We can't assume that just because an item is on the shelf that it is going to be safe, it's going to protect our children adequately, because, it very well may not," said attorney James Swartz, of W.A.T.C.H.

During the past year, there have been 45 recalls representing about 4 million toys. However, a voluntary system of recalls for products that can cause injury or death to children means countless dangerous toys slip through the cracks.

Interesting Ask Ty Question

Q: Are your 2.0 Beanie's rooms decorated the same or does each room have a theme?
(submitted by cold water)

A: My 2.0 Beanies each have their own unique rooms, and I can't wait till you see what's coming next !

Karen kindly shares the following information
Well, Ty certainly seems to be having fun changing hang tag layouts and fonts, names, ribbons, extra code tags, etc, with the Bo Beanie 2.0's, not to mention making distribution scarce. I've recorded the 3 different versions so far in Beanie sized Bo's on Stashmatic. This is a site for collectors to keep track of their inventory, so with the different versions listed collectors can check the one they have. I do not have version 3 yet, but think that may be the regular released one so am waiting on it. If any member has version 3, please can they add a photograph. It needs to be their own photograph, and scan of inside hang tag, if possible.

Beanie Baby Version 1
Beanie Bo tush tag, fine font hang tag, dob top, yellow code tag, white, red, blue ribbon (i.e. red separates white and blue color)

Beanie Baby Version 2
Bo tush tag, bold font hang tag, dob bottom, yellow code tag, white, red, blue ribbon (i.e. red separates white and blue color)

Beanie Baby Version 3
Bo tush tag, large font hang tag, dob bottom, white patriotic code tag, red, white, blue ribbon (i.e. white separates blue and red color)
http://www.stashmatic.com/items/list?criteria=bo+beanie+2.0

Key-Clips
They appear to have 3 different colored clips, one red, one white, one blue. I would love photos that can be put on Stashmatic as people find these, please.

Classic
So far, just seen one version in photo's. Again, I'd love a photo if anyone has one. Thanks.
Love: Karen

I apologize for the lack of news but with a gloomy economy, there just is not a whole lot of positive to report on in regards t o the collectibles market. I have also been tied up with my dad. Medicare will no longer pay for his nursing home, he has been released and we are all pitching in and helping out with his care.

I believe the good folks at Ty are all on vacation or working up some secret magic behind the scenes. They have not been heard from in a while and have many of us wondering what is going on?

I have received many notes from collectors who dislike the silent retirements and introductions, they feel it has taken the fun out of collecting!

I kinda miss the good ole days!
The Info Beanie was a favorite for leaving hints and making my mind wonder in all directions. Nowadays, it appears he or she is at a loss for words!
I miss the swirling Newsflash sign when least expected!
I miss late night announcements!
I miss the juicy little tidbits of gossip, even if they did not pan out from time to time, it still stirred excitement!
I miss the photos collectors use to send via e-mail of their collections and funny things they would do using Beanies.
I miss a lot of the webmasters that have decided to move on and no longer share in this secret little world of ours!
With 50 fast approaching, I guess I miss feeling young, full of excitement and all the things that I have been involved with in the last 14 years!
YIKES - 14 years of Ty, what a ride it has been! I normally do not like roller coasters, but this has been fun.

What do you miss? msjanie@comcast.net

Hang in there folks, things are bound to get better sooner or later!

Ms. Janie

Dog gone! Bo Beanie Babies scamper off shelves
Ty Inc. has released a doll modeled on Obama family’s presidential pooch

Where, oh where, have the little dogs gone? The little dog dolls, that is.

Bo, a Beanie Baby version of Barack Obama’s new presidential pooch, has been disappearing from shelves within hours of his arrival in stores. He has also become eBay’s latest pet project, with purchasers seeking double the doll’s $4.99 retail price online minutes after they buy it through retail outlets. Some are even asking more than $100.

Dear Ms. Janie,
It is with great sadness that I am writing to you about my decision to close down my website, Peace Mania (www.peacebears.com). I am just now completing my freshman year of college, and feel that the money I am paying for Peace Mania could be put to use somewhere else. I will be closing Peace Mania in the near future.

Peace Mania is the website I started to be a complete resource for Peace bear collectors. I started it early in my high school career, and for two or three years worked hard to keep it updated. In addition to Beanie news, Peace Mania also contained lots of articles about every imaginable aspect of Peace the Beanie Baby.

Even though I still keep up with Beanies, my interests have changed and I feel that Beanies just don’t hold that special "magic" that made them what they were. However, I couldn’t just close my site: I put too much of work into Peace Mania to just shut it down.
That’s why I am also happy to introduce "The Encyclopeaceia," the complete informative contents of Peace Mania in a convenient book! It is available for purchase in my online store at
http://www.cafepress.com/catboxgifts.384509172. I decided to offer this book because I know that there are still people out there who have a passion for Beanies, and for Peace, and I didn’t want to completely take away a possible resource. (In the near future, I will also be adding a data CD which will contain all of the images from Peace Mania.)

In closing, thank you to all those who helped to make Peace Mania what it was. Happy collecting!
David Vogel

New shipment of stuffed version of Obama’s pooch hit Chicago shelves

May 14 (ANI): A second shipment of Beanie Babies stuffed toy dog, inspired by U.S. President Barack Obama’s pooch Bo, has arrived at Chicago stores.
Stuffed toy manufacturers Ty Inc. has come out with its Bo the Dog Beanie Babies, which went on sale at Mag Mile apparel store and the 834 N. Michigan Borders bookstore on Tuesday.
In mid-April, Ty had made huge profits after Mag Mile’s initial shipment of the 4.99 dollars toy Bo went off the shelves within hours, in the same week when President Obama introduced America to his family’s newest addition.
Even Borders store, which is among the exclusive retailers for the pup, had received an April shipment of about 25 about 4 p.m. and was sold out by 9 p.m. with purchases limited to one per customer, said managers.

Lighters That Look Like Toys Can Kill
Across the country, legislators are trying to "light a fire under" retailers to ban the sale of lighters that look so much like toys, even some adults are fooled.

Telling a child not to play with matches is one thing. Telling him not to play with a colorful frog or Santa that sings Christmas tunes is quite another. Across the nation, novelty lighters that closely resemble harmless toys have been responsible for injuries and accidents and even death. According to the No Novelty Lighter Coalition:

Star Tours 2.0 Reportedly Now In Production

Rumors of the existence of an update to Disney’s Star Tours attraction (often dubbed Star Tours 2.0) have been circulating for many years. Now, one site claims that production has finally begun…

Yesterday was the third day of a secret LucasFilm film shoot in West Hollywood. If you were allowed to enter the "LODESTAR" production stage, you would’ve seen Boba Fett, Admiral Ackbar, a Tusken Raider, and even some Jawas. C3PO himself Anthony Daniels will be filming later this week.
So what is LucasFilm shooting? The good news is that George Lucas isn’t making a another Star Wars movie (not yet anyways) or additional scenes for some super duper special edition. And No, the Star Wars live-action television series has yet to begin production. So what is it?

The New Wave of Toys: Less Packaging, More Fun

Parenting styles vary between parents, from the chill, laid-back parents to the more nerve-wracked, safety-conscious parents. Green Toys Inc. is trying to go after both groups with eco-friendly toys that are held to stricter safety standards. We tested out the Ecosaucer flying disc and a tea set, but they have several other products, from sand play sets to jump ropes.

Playing With The Toy Makers
With such earth-shaking movies as X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra all slated to hit the silver screen this summer, the toy manufacturers are going to be having a field day with the sales that will follow what could be a blockbuster summer.

And the company that is poised to benefit from this onslaught of movies is Hasbro Inc. ( HAS - news - people ). The company already has toys being produced in relation to all three storylines, and children will undoubtedly be lining up for their own set of Wolverine claws.
